Background
- Northwood Holocaust Memorial Day Events sessions take place in late January / early February each year to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day, the national day of rememberance for the victims of the Holocaust and of other genocides.
- Events are organised and jointly hosted by a large team of volunteers from Northwood United Synagogue and Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue and the wider community.
- The major Holocaust education bodies provide support, consultation & training. (See links for further information on these organisations)
- Typically 2,000 secondary school students and teachers from over 30 schools in Hillingdon, Hertfordshire and Harrow attend a half-day workshop every year.
- NHMDE meets the requirements of the national curriculum in History, English, PSHE (personal, social & health education), Citizenship, Religious Education and Geography and is endorsed by the Local Education Authorities of Harrow, Hertfordshire and Hillingdon.
- Some 20,000 young people have attended NHMDE workshops since the event started more than ten years ago.
- In 2010, satellite sessions of the event were held at Bushey United Synagogue, Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue.
- Many other UK synagogues have adopted the Northwood blueprint to bring students together to learn more about the Holocaust.
- NHMDE, the largest event of its type in the UK, is free of charge and non- denominational.
